Springfield Iron Fly

The Iron Fly was a hit! Good turnout with some good fishy dudes. Plateau fly shop did an awesome job hosting they're about as cool of dudes as you're going to find. The night started off with lots of good drinks from The Missouri Spirit House, they have some good whiskey by the way. They had a few challenges before the Iron Fly contest began, they had an off handed whip finishing contest, 6 whips and trim then the knot had to hold. It was more difficult then it sounds, I actually won the whip finish contest. I know now though I would be in serious trouble if something happened to my right hand. Then people who had never tied a fly before tied their first fly. It took a lot of convincing but my wife tied her first 2 flies. Then it was time for the main event. There was about 20 competitors in 2 different heats, only 2 went on from each heat. The mystery bag from the first round consisted  of Dorito wrappers, a Patagonia catalog, blue bucktail, blue chenille, 2 pink beads, a piece of fly line, and to marabou feathers. It was fun throwing something together you had to get fairly creative, because you had to use part of every ingredient. Zach and I didn't get out of the first heat, but it was a good time.

We got to met Brian Wise, if you think he seems cool in his videos he's twice that cool in person. We post his videos periodically on the blog but check him out on Fly Fishing the Ozarks. There's also a link to his site on the Supporting the Locals tab. The guys from Plateau, are some of the nicest hospitable guys your going to come across, if you're in Springfield check them out their site is also on the Supporting the Locals page. All in all awesome night glad I made the trip I hope they host another one in the near future.
