Back to Reality

Now back to reality for me…DANG IT!  I just returned home from an unforgettable, week long trip to Wyoming and Colorado where I met up with some members of the Trout Porn Facebook page.  They were making their yearly pilgrimage to the North Platte and Big Horn rivers and since I had never fished or even been to Wyoming, I had to invite myself along.  With a forecasted 40+ people and 18 boats in attendance I wasn’t sure what to expect.  This trip had already been nicknamed the “shit show” by most of the Trout Porn members.  I saw it as a chance to fish with a lot of new people that I only knew through Facebook.

So I packed my bags and jumped on a plane to Denver to meet up with a small portion of the group for an amazing, fat wrapped beef loin dinner put together by one of the member’s wife.  While having drinks and increasing my waist line I quickly picked up on something that would be a reoccurring theme throughout the trip.  These new friends of mine are straight up, good hearted people that share the same passion and respect for fly fishing as I do.  It felt like a family get-together right off the bat.

We rounded up the troops early the next morning and made our way to the North Platte River where we met up with about half of the group.  Boats were launched and chilly winds were battled.  The fish were feeding on tiny midges and annelids in the deep runs and the tail outs; just about everyone was putting fish in hand.  It was my first experience in a drift boat and I must say I enjoyed the hell out of it!  That evening we all met up for dinner and drinks at the rental and swapped stories and pictures of the day.  Tears were shed and hugs given when a young girl by the name of Willow made an appearance with her family.  This little girl has been through a lot in her short little life with numerous surgeries and sleepless nights for the parents.  The Trout Porn family has pulled together for this little girl from day one with prayers and support for this future Fly Girl’s family.  You might even see a #willowstrong sticker rolling around on a vehicle near you.

The next day everyone headed up to the beautiful Big Horn River to meet up with the remainder of the group for a couple more days of fishing.  Like I mentioned earlier, all of the new people that I met were as cool as a fan and skilled anglers too.  Many quality rainbows, cutbows, browns and cutthroats were brought to the boats over those two days on everything from thread body midges to streamers.  I got to a point where I was passing up photos with 18” fish because that was the norm and I knew my chances of hooking up with another one in the next run were pretty good.  Not only were the fish big, they were clean and fought hard!  I can officially say that I am now ruined when it comes to catching trout around here, just kidding…I love my little spring creek trout found here in the midwest.  There were some friendly competitions held throughout this trip like biggest and smallest fish, most improved rower, most inappropriate, etc.  I thought I was going to take the smallest fish award but apparently Scott is better at catching the little guys than I am!  The award ceremony took place at a local restaurant and was the perfect way to end the trip with the majority of the group.  I made a lot of new friends and connections from all over the US and it’s safe to say you will be seeing a lot more of these types of trip stories in the years to come.

On our way out of Wyoming we made a quick stop by Boysen State Park and the guys I was traveling with put a few fish to hand.  As far as I was concerned, my trip was complete and I was there just to take it all in before leaving.  Once back in Colorado I was able to finish off my trip with a day on the Arkansas River with a few browns to hand and a solid rainbow that I lost on the flop at dusk.  I got the chance to fish with another Trout Porn member that wasn’t able to make the Wyoming trip and just like I expected it was a blast!

This is a trip that I am glad I was able to make and will not forget the details of for a long time.  The folks that I met are as good as they come, the fish were beautiful and the scenery was incredible.  If the name Trout Porn perks up your ears you should swing by their Facebook page and Twitter to see what’s up.  There is also a pod cast out there that is really entertaining to listen to as well!
